Emergency & immediate help

Air conditioning breakdown in Mallorca: emergency call-outs and first steps

In peak season from June to September, an air conditioning failure in Mallorca is not a comfort issue but, in a let property, a case for immediate action - indoor temperatures above 30 degrees are grounds for complaint.

What you can do right now

  1. Check the consumer unit: air conditioning almost always sits on its own circuit breaker (magnetotérmico). If it has tripped, reset it once - if it trips again, stop there and call a qualified firm.
  2. Check the filters: a clogged filter is the most common cause of poor cooling and of the unit icing up. Take the filter out, rinse it and let it dry completely.
  3. If the outdoor unit is iced up or water is dripping from the indoor unit, switch the system off and let it defrost for two hours - then start it again.
  4. Remote control: check the batteries, the mode (cooling rather than fan only) and the target temperature. It sounds obvious, but it is a common false alarm.
  5. If you smell burning or see scorching on the cables: isolate the unit at once and do not switch it back on. If there is visible smoke or flame: leave the property and call 112.

What a call-out should cost

Reliable average prices for emergency call-outs in Mallorca cannot honestly be quoted - they depend on the time of day, the journey and the type of unit. So always ask for a written quotation (presupuesto previo) before any work starts, and have the call-out charge and the hourly rate quoted separately.

The single best protection against overcharging: insist on a written quote before any work starts - in Spanish a presupuesto previo. Refusing to give one is the common thread running through almost every documented complaint. A reputable firm will state the call-out fee, the hourly rate and any night or weekend surcharge without being asked.

What to say on the phone, in Spanish

If only the technician on duty picks up, these sentences get you through the call. Read the Spanish out loud; the line underneath tells you what it means.

Buenos días, llamo porque el aire acondicionado no enfría.
Good morning, I am calling because the air conditioning is not cooling.
He limpiado el filtro y el automático vuelve a saltar.
I have cleaned the filter and the circuit breaker keeps tripping.
Es urgente, hay huéspedes en la casa. ¿Pueden venir hoy?

Estoy en [localidad], la dirección es [calle y número]; puede llamarme a este número.

¿Cuánto cuesta el desplazamiento y me pueden dar un presupuesto previo?
How much is the call-out charge, and can you give me a quotation in advance?
Perdone, ¿puede repetirlo más despacio, por favor?
Sorry, could you repeat that more slowly, please?

Frequently asked questions

What does an emergency air conditioning call-out cost in Mallorca?

No honest average can be given, because the journey, the time of day, the type of unit and parts availability vary widely. Ask for a written quotation (presupuesto previo) before work starts - every reputable firm will issue one. Have the call-out charge, the hourly rate and the materials listed separately, and ask explicitly about the surcharge for evening, weekend or bank holiday work.

Why is my air conditioning no longer cooling properly?

The most common causes are a dirty filter, a blocked outdoor unit or a shortage of refrigerant caused by a leak. You can check and clean the filter and the outdoor unit yourself. In Spain, refrigerant may only be topped up by certified firms - anyone offering to do it quickly without looking for the cause of the loss is not fixing the problem, only postponing it.

Are there genuine 24-hour air conditioning call-outs in Mallorca?

Some firms advertise round-the-clock cover, others service hours running into the evening. Our directory marks which firms state that they offer emergency cover - and whether we were able to confirm it by telephone or whether it is the firm's own claim on its website. If in doubt, ring two of them: in peak season the good engineers are often booked up for days.

When is an air conditioning failure really an emergency?

In a holiday let, almost always: guests without cooling in an August week will complain, and rent reductions follow. The same applies in households with babies, ill or elderly people, because heat there is a health risk. In every other case an appointment on the next working day is usually cheaper than the emergency surcharge.

What can I do until the engineer arrives?

Close the shutters and curtains on the sunny side so the rooms do not heat up further, and only ventilate through in the cool night hours. Fans move the air and noticeably lower the perceived temperature. Avoid the oven and other sources of heat. In fincas with air conditioning in one room only: close the doors and use that room as a retreat.
